STERLING FAIRING COMPOUNDS

SPANISH LANGUAGE APPLICATION GUIDE

U-4870 EPOXY FAIRING COMPOUND is a vast improvement over the old U-2706.  1:1 mix with U-4871 catalyst by volume, the components are white and yellow producing a cream colored putty, easily covered with primer.  U-4870 spreads thicker (to ½" on vertical surfaces) which results in fewer voids and sands with far less effort than other products. Warming cans to 75°F or so in subdued temperatures permits easier mixing.

Note:  Use U-4910 Fast Cure Catalyst for quicker cure in cool application conditions.  Mix U-4870 2:1 with U-4910.

Before applying, sand surface with 60-100 grit and wipe with C-8762 Surface Prep.  Use 24-36 grit paper to quickly level fairing compound.

Be sure to mix contents of each container before combining, when the full kit will not be used.  Expect some stiffness when mixing, though in a few minutes, whether by hand or power application, material becomes very buttery, spreading beautifully.  Work life is about 30 minutes at 75°F.  Overnight curing is usually required before sanding, somewhat more in subdued temperatures.

New fairing may also be effectively used as a tight glaze, to fill deep board sanding scratches and other minor subsurface irregularities, leaving a clean substrate for high build priming, ending the need for a second finish glaze product.

Caution: As with any heavily applied putty, always be sure to allow several days for high build primer to cure and release its solvents, before troweling over it.  This is especially true with application temperatures below 65-70°F.  Do not add solvent to material to facilitate spreading.

U-4869 LOW VISCOSITY EPOXY FINISHING FAIRING COMPOUND

A newer product, U-4869 was developed for finish glazing and applications where less filling and a smoother finished surface are desired.  It will fill from ¼ to ⅜" without sagging on a vertical surface, and with fewer voids.  Easier to mix and more creamy in texture, it does a better job of filling small subsurface defects, deep fairing board sanding scratches and voids noticed after coarse board sanding the U-4870.  It is more suitable, therefore, when a nominal fill is required.

Mix 1:1 with U-4871 and apply immediately.  Batch work life is about 30 minutes at 70°F.  Overnight cure is required before sanding.

FOR QUICKER CURE IN COOLER TEMPERATURES:

Use U-4910 Fast Cure Catalyst for quicker cure in cool application conditions.  Mix U-4869 2:1 with U-4910.

U-4869 LOW VISCOSITY FINISHING FAIRING COMPOUND

A newer product, U-4869 was developed for finish glazing and applications where less filling and a smoother finished surface are desired.  It will fill from 1/4 to 3/8" without sagging on a vertical surface, and with fewer voids.  Easier to mix and more creamy in texture, it does a better job of filling small subsurface defects, deep fairing board sanding scratches and voids noticed after coarse board sanding the U4870.  It is more suitable, therefore, when a nominal fill is required.

Mix 1:1 with U-4871 and apply immediately.  Batch work life is about 30 minutes at 70°F.  Overnight cure is required before sanding.

Follow remaining application instructions in U4870 section, just above.
