STATE OF THE ART

STERLING two-component aliphatic linear polyurethane coatings are the finest available in the industry and represent the very highest technology for application in the commercial and private aviation, marine, industrial and transportation fields. After years of development, testing and manufacturing systems refinement they have become the most advanced coatings on the market today.

The incredibly durable, high gloss and color-retentive topcoats may be applied on almost any properly-prepared surface including gel-coat, existing oil base paint and enamels, wood, metals, Plexiglass, Formica, masonry, glass and composites. STERLING'S tough finishes maintain their brilliant luster, rich color and hard finish up to three times longer than ordinary coatings without yellowing, chalking or fading.

Best of all, the durable coatings are virtually maintenance-free, requiring only soap and water to restore the brilliant shine.  STERLING topcoats are classified as "pure" aliphatic urethanes. Based upon the polyester chemical backbone, coupled with the finest available isocyanate catalysts, they have not been modified with compromising drying oils or acrylic resins, meeting the toughest demands of the aerospace industry.

These hard, glossy, pure polyurethanes have proved  superior in applications requiring extreme durability, adhesion and reduced maintenance.

They resist the corrosive effects of salt water, chemical spills and even Skydrol hydraulic fluid without losing their shine. The hard surface and increased adhesion qualities are capable of enduring prop-blasted dirt, rain or sleet at supersonic speeds and the ravages of tropical salt water climes.

Backed by the very finest primer systems, suitable for nearly every surface and exposure, with over one hundred standard colors and an unlimited number of custom hues, STERLING coatings are truly state-of-the-art.  And they can be brushed or sprayed.

PRODUCTS FOR TOMORROW
NEW TECHNOLOGY LOW VOC   On account of changes in raw material technology and ever-changing air pollution regulations, STERLING has developed an entirely new topcoat system and new primers, to comply with the most restrictive environmental rules, those of the South Coast Air Pollution Control District in California. Eventually most metropolitan areas will require such products.

STERLING Low VOC primers and topcoats are the result of years of research and development that have proved this new technology as the coating system for tomorrow.  These products are quickly passing through the approval processes of the U.S. Military, general aviation airframe manufacturers and industrial accounts and have proved to be successful in outdoor applications in coastal areas, for the yacht refinishing trade.  Soon they will be the new standard for rule-compliant, extreme high gloss systems.

GENERAL APPLICATION INFORMATION  Surfaces to be primed should be clean, dry and free of wax, grease or other contaminants. Always wipe questionable surfaces with STERLING C-8762 Surface Prep to remove contaminants, using the two-rag method. A rag lightly saturated with Surface Prep should be used to loosen contaminants, to be followed immediately while surface is still wet, with a clean rag wipe. Wiping rags should be clean cotton, reclaimed diapers being the ideal. Shop rags, often containing silicones and detergents, should never be used.

Existing oil base paint finishes, automotive lacquers and acrylic enamels should not be wiped with C-8762 for softening could well occur, leading to surface damage. Denatured alcohol or even a detergent wash are more appropriate.

Previously painted surfaces should always be tested, before priming, with a small quantity of catalyzed primer, to make sure that existing paint is not lifted or blistered. When in doubt, a very light coat of primer one day, followed by further build, if necessary, after 24 hours, will reduce the chances of lifting or surface damage. No sanding is required in this short time lapse.
